What is Sustainable Seafood?

The simplest answer is, understanding the source
Where our fin fish and shellfish comes from and how it is harvested.

The quality and freshness of our seafood is as high as any restaurant in the Midwest.
We attempt to feature the bounty of the ocean in a responsible way.

These lesser known species are becoming well known by many of our guests and those visiting from the coast.
Fresh finish and high quality shellfish is one of the final all natural proteins available to consumers.
VOTE WITH YOUR FORK AND AVOID OVERFISHED/EXPLOITED SPECIES.

Angler's doesn't serve many of the popular and over fished species or cheap frozen imports that are found in
other restaurants and the frozen aisle of most grocery stores.

Seasons in Seafood?

What you will find is high quality shellfish and finfish that may be lesser known in the Midwest.
Also, we serve seafood in season (means it is actually fresh). Halibut and Alaskan Salmon in February is not usually fresh,
Jeff sources WHOLE FISH, and we break them down in house, meaning they are much fresher due to less handling/processing.  This is something that happens in less and less restaurants as technique/quality and cost/popularity are unable to coexist.

Following seasonal fin fish and shellfish availabilty ensures quality, integrity, and proper price points.

Fresh Seafood In The Midwest?

We believe in Lawrence and the surrounding area's ability to support our approach to serving sustainable seafood.
We will continue to provide a truly unique/quality seafood experience in Lawrence as long as there is support.

The seafood industry is no different than the majority of the modern food industry, with the exception that the majority is a finite resource if not managed properly.
It is about cost and how to make the most money .  Sadly that means most places are serving "seafood" at a price point that sacrifices quality, integrity, and the future of seafood.
Our business plan isn't short term gimmicks, but a long term business plan.
The beginning will be tough, we hope the payoff is building a sustainable seafood culture in a most unlikely part of the world.

SOME INTERESTING INFO

Fishing provides nearly 12 percent of the world’s food
supply, and as seafood popularity and demand grow,
so does the stress and impact on the Earth’s oceans.

As Americans, we consume over FIVE BILLION pounds of seafood annually, only surpassed by Japan and China.
If we maintain this rate of consumption, experts estimate that worldwide seafood species would be nearly exstinct by the year 2048.  Experts say that nearly 90 percent of species of large predatory fish are gone.  The major contributors to these problems are overfishing, irresponsible harvesting, and mismanagment of fisheries.  We feel that the power of public knowledge and educated consumer choices can help protect our oceans for future generations to enjoy.
Ecologically, socially, and environmentally responsible harvesting of seafood is at the core of
what fresh finfish and shellfish we provide to you.  Some people might ask how a fresh seafood restaurant focused on sustainability can possilby survive in the midwest.  We believe that the community and culture here in Lawrence, KS is the perfect place to start the mission of Angler’s Seafood House.  Thanks for supporting local business and sustainable seafood.
